Melanie Frogozo, OD, FAAO, FSLS


Dr. Melanie Frogozo is an optometrist who is a Diplomate in the Cornea, Contact Lens, and Refractive Technologies section of the American Academy of Optometry. This is among the highest of honors in the profession, which places her in a highly elite group of internationally recognized doctors who make contact lenses a focus of their practice. Her contact lens expertise is unmatched in the Texas Hill Country.

Dr. Frogozo is residency trained in the treatment and management of anterior segment disease through medically necessary contact lenses. Originally from Houston, she completed college at the University of Texas at Austin and optometry school at the University of Houston. After graduation in 2008, she practiced within a commercial optometry setting in Kansas City, MO and it was during this time she became interested in advancing her knowledge in eye disease and specialty contact lenses. In 2011, she made the decision to pursue a residency in cornea and contact lenses at the University of Houston where she also completed a rotation at the PROSE clinic at Alkek Eye Center at the Baylor College of Medicine. After residency, she took a faculty position with the prestigious University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences where she continued to develop her specialty. In 2013, she returned to Texas and joined Alamo Eye Care.

Dr. Frogozo’s expertise is managing very complex corneal and anterior segment cases with specialty rigid and soft gas permeable contact lenses such as keratoconus, pediatric aphakia, sjogrens syndrome, and graft versus host disease. She also enjoys fitting soft and hard bifocal contact lenses and contact lenses for myopia control such as orthokeratology. Her additional professional interests include dry eye syndrome, Meibomian gland dysfunction, and custom scleral and corneal lens fitting based on impressions and software design. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and the Scleral Lens Education Society, an advisory board member for the Gas Permeable Lens Institute, a committee chair member for the Contact Lens Section of the American Optometric Association, a member of the International Society of Contact Lens Specialists, and a member of the Texas Optometric Association. Also, she is an adjunct faculty member for the University of Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry, a contributing columnist for the leading contact lens information source Contact Lens Spectrum, an advisory board member for the publication Modern Optometry, and serves as an industry consultant for several contact lens companies. She also lectures nationally and internationally on contemporary topics in contact lenses.

When she is not seeing patients, Dr. Frogozo enjoys spending time with her husband Jon and daughter Teal, and their two cats Ilsa and Mr. Big. She also enjoys practicing ashthanga yoga and ballet. Additionally, she volunteers at Haven for Hope’s I care San Antonio. For all of her accomplishments, she was a chosen recipient of the 40 under 40 award San Antonio 2017.
